As 2021 draws to a close, many of us will be re-thinking how best to navigate the new year with a pandemic still among us. Our lives have undeniably been altered in so many ways. Homes have become not only our schools and our workplaces, but quite literally – our sanctuary – and design trends for 2022 are reflecting this new universal mindset.
Multifunctional spaces are coming in hot in 2022 and are most likely here to stay. With people being at home for months on end, we are re-evaluating how we use each space in our homes and how we can improve the functions of a single room. Storage will be key and found in unusual spaces, while furniture choices will be a more conscious decision and likely need to do double duty.
No longer your parent’s “basement,” the trend in lower-level living has turned high end. These prime multifunctional spaces are ramping up with music and gaming rooms, state of-the-art home theatres, full kitchens, home gyms and even practice areas for golf or soccer. High end finishes and textured fabrics rule.
Velvets, sherpa, and boucles are the fabrics for 2022. These multifunctional spaces allow for more family fun and safer entertaining in small groups.
Sustainability is a big buzz word in 2022 design. Eco-friendly materials that are reclaimed, recycled, and ethically sourced are gaining more and more attention, especially as the younger generations begin to buy and renovate homes for themselves. Vintage furniture is making a huge comeback and is a great way to create a more sustainable home. Antiques can add a lot of character to your home and with the current supply chain delays, people are looking to upcycle and repurpose furniture. It’s more budget friendly and ensures that your neighbor doesn’t have the exact same one from Ikea.
Curves are “in” right now. Curved furniture is reviving the timeless mid-century trends from the 60s and 70s, but the experts are saying that more people will begin leaning into the idea of curves – whether it be mirrors, arches, kitchen islands or statement pieces such as barrel back chairs.
Another buzz word for 2022 is “biophilic” – meaning literally, love of life or living things. With everyone feeling couped up and craving nature, the trend is to bring the outside in.
People are seeking calmness which can be achieved with using neutral, soft shades of green and lots more tropical plants. Other colors we will be seeing more of are neutrals with brown undertones to soften the grays of the last decade, along with terra cotta and mustard yellows. Look, also, for black accents and hardware to provide an edge and contrast to
more minimalist spaces. Even swapping out black handles on existing pieces like side tables or tv cabinets will add a pop of contrast to a space.
